The name "R2-D2" from Star Wars was said to have come from when George Lucas was making an earlier film, American Graffiti. Sound editor Walter Murch says he was responsible for the utterance which sparked the name of the droid. Murch asked for Reel 2, Dialog Track 2, abbreviated "R-2-D-2". Lucas heard this request and stated it was a great name after some clarification.
